Provenance

On November 1st, 1923, in the town of Rugby, England, some two thousand rugby enthusiasts gathered to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the first ever rugby match. A combined England-Wales side, wearing white jerseys emblazoned with the rose of England and the feathers of Wales, faced off against a combined Ireland-Scotland side, and narrowly won. One hundred years earlier in 1823, the story goes, a student at Rugby School named William Webb Ellis displayed (to quote a plaque at the school) "a fine disregard for the rules of football, took the ball into his hands, and ran with it", inadvertently inventing Rugby football.
