Provenance
In 1895, the sport of rugby split into two codes: the traditional "Rugby Union" and the more working-class "Rugby League." Over time, the rules of the two codes developed and diverged, and today Rugby League is a fast-paced version of the game popular in northern England, Australia, and New Zealand. While traditional Rugby Union jerseys are either solid colors or horizontal stripes, Rugby League jerseys traditionally use an inverted chevron pattern, ironically invoking the design of a traditional cricket or tennis sweater.
