Annapolis, Maryland, is home to two very different education institutions: St. John’s College - a quirky liberal arts college known for its Great Books curriculum that happens to be one of the oldest education institutions in the New World - and the U.S. Naval Academy.
According to legend, one spring day in 1982, the Commandant of the Naval Academy got chatting with a St. John’s freshman and quipped that the Midshipmen could beat the Johnnies at any sport. The student countered, “What about croquet?” and the Annapolis Cup was born.
Fast forward 37 years and St. John’s has beaten the Midshipmen for the Cup 29 times.
Set in the heart of Annapolis, the annual croquet match has become a community-wide celebration, attracting thousands of spectators in outrageous lawn party attire.
As proud sponsors of this year’s match and official outfitters of the Johnnies, we’ve produced a limited edition Annapolis Cup collection. Available Friday, April 26th at 11am EST.
